On the day of the planned meeting in California, Douglas spotted law enforcement officers and attempted to flee in his vehicle. As agents moved in, a female passenger exited the vehicle, screaming that Douglas possessed a grenade and intended to kill them. Douglas then displayed what appeared to be a real grenade, later confirmed to be a replica, and engaged in a brief standoff with a SWAT team before being taken into custody.
