Four Gulf Coast cities have made it to the top 25 best places to retire in the United States, as announced by U.S. News & World Report. This report, released on November 18, 2024, highlights Naples as the number one city for retirees in 2025. Alongside Naples, Sarasota, Tampa, and Fort Myers are recognized for their appealing retirement amenities and environments.
To determine the best cities for retirement, U.S. News & World Report surveyed 3,500 individuals aged 45 and older to identify key factors in choosing retirement destinations. The survey revealed that happiness and housing affordability are top priorities for retirees, reflecting a shift from previous years. According to Dawn Bradbury, assistant managing editor for real estate at U.S. News, retirees are now looking for places that offer both financial comfort and enjoyment.
The survey measured happiness through various indicators, including crime rates and air quality. Additionally, health care quality, retiree taxes, desirability, and job market opportunities significantly influenced city rankings. Naples, a city known for its upscale shopping and dining, shines as an ‘ideal retirement destination for those who enjoy the finer things,’ according to U.S. News. Its high desirability metrics, low crime rates, and favorable retiree taxes have contributed to its top ranking. Notably, 36% of Naples’ population is aged 65 and older, creating a retiree-friendly community.
Sarasota, ranked fourth, is celebrated for its beaches, arts venues, and lively downtown atmosphere. With 34% of its population being 65 and older, it offers a vibrant setting for retirees. The city is also appreciated for its excellent restaurants and shopping facilities, appealing to those looking for a lively retirement.
In 18th place, Tampa presents a well-rounded retirement destination with its parks, cultural attractions, professional sports, and diverse restaurants. In Tampa, approximately 13% of the population is aged 65 and above, contributing to its popularity among retirees seeking a dynamic urban environment.
Fort Myers, ranking 24th, is praised for its resort-like communities and ample recreational activities such as golfing and fishing. A vibrant arts scene and good air quality further enhance its appeal. The city has a significant retiree community, with 27% of its residents aged 65 and above.
Besides being top retirement choices, these cities are also listed as some of the best places to live in 2024, according to rankings released in May. Florida’s favorable tax policies for retirees, including no taxation on Social Security, pension, and IRA or 401(k) incomes, contribute to the state’s appeal. Other Florida cities like Jacksonville, Pensacola, Port Saint Lucie, and Melbourne also feature in the top retirement destinations list.
With their attractive amenities and retiree-friendly environments, Gulf Coast cities like Naples, Sarasota, Tampa, and Fort Myers continue to be top choices for retirement. Their rankings by U.S. News & World Report reflect a growing preference for locations that offer both lifestyle satisfaction and practical considerations such as affordability and safety.
