Lakeland, Fla. – In the aftermath of Hurricane Milton, Lake Bonny residents are raising concerns about the ongoing challenges they face, while efforts to provide aid intensify.
The United Way of Central Florida has announced a community recovery outreach event scheduled for this Saturday at Lakeland’s RP Funding Center. This initiative aims to support those impacted by Hurricane Milton, particularly residents around Lake Bonny who continue to struggle with severe issues over a month after the storm.
Christina Criser Jackson, President and CEO of United Way of Central Florida, emphasized the importance of the event, stating, “We recognize that many of our neighbors are still facing challenges in the aftermath of the storm, and this event is an important step in ensuring that help is available.” The event will offer various resources, including FEMA assistance, essential supplies such as food and toiletry kits, and health services.
During a recent city commission meeting, Lake Bonny residents voiced their frustrations over the slow recovery process. Nicole Ramirez, a local homeowner, expressed her distress over her insurance company dropping her coverage due to the storm damage. She reported, “I have mold and sewage and standing water still in my home. One dumpster for all the homes in our cul-de-sac was not enough. I didn’t even get most of my house taken out.”
Residents are also facing logistical issues in the cleanup efforts. Michael Coker, another resident, shared his efforts in removing damaged flooring, stating, “I live on Longfellow Boulevard. I have removed five rooms of redwood flooring that is sitting out by the road. I’ve been told by one of the guys on the garbage truck that the county won’t pick that up… they have the equipment to do it with. I don’t.”
United Way is encouraging affected residents to attend the outreach event to access necessary assistance. For those unable to attend, information about available services can be obtained by dialing 211 or texting their zip code to 898-211.
Efforts to aid Lake Bonny residents highlight the ongoing and complex challenges faced in the aftermath of Hurricane Milton. While organizations strive to provide support, the voices of those affected underscore the need for continued and expedited recovery efforts.
