Republican Representative Elise Stefanik officially launched her campaign for New York governor on Friday, targeting Democratic incumbent Governor Kathy Hochul on issues of affordability and for her support of New York City Mayor-elect Zohran Mamdani. Stefanik’s campaign video asserted that “the Empire State has fallen,” framing her bid around economic concerns prevalent in recent elections.

Campaign Focus on Affordability and Criticism of Hochul

The campaign video prominently featured criticisms of Governor Hochul, alleging she has made New York the most unaffordable state in the nation. Specific points of attack included “sky-high taxes, unaffordable rent, soaring energy costs and record high grocery bills,” directly addressing cost-of-living concerns.

Stefanik’s campaign also swiftly attacked Hochul for her endorsement of Mayor-elect Mamdani during the recent mayoral race. The video claimed Hochul “cozied up to a defund-the-police, tax-hiking, antisemitic Communist” by backing Mamdani, a self-identified democratic socialist.

This early focus on Mamdani signals a potential strategy by Republicans to utilize his political identity as a motivating factor for their base. Such a dynamic could create a contentious relationship between the governor and the New York City mayor, should Stefanik be elected.

Broader Attacks and Political Context

In the weeks leading up to her campaign announcement, Stefanik had already escalated her critiques of Hochul, particularly concerning her endorsement of Mamdani. Stefanik has also consistently criticized Hochul’s handling of public safety, including her approaches to immigration enforcement and crime.

Earlier in June, the two officials clashed during a congressional hearing over President Donald Trump’s deployment of the National Guard to California. Despite her close alliance with President Trump and her role in House GOP leadership, Stefanik’s launch video made no direct mention of him, a notable omission in a state that is a Democratic stronghold.

Republicans face an uphill battle in New York, a state where they have not won a statewide election since 2002. While President Trump narrowed his margin of defeat in New York between his 2020 and 2024 presidential campaigns, a midterm cycle is historically less favorable to the sitting president’s party.

Campaign Resources and Primary Landscape

Stefanik enters the race with significant financial backing, reporting more than $13 million cash on hand. Her campaign team includes several former advisors to President Trump and long-time aides with experience in finance, communications, and operations.

She is considered a strong favorite in the Republican primary. One potential rival, Representative Mike Lawler, was reportedly persuaded by President Trump to remain in his narrowly divided House district rather than seek the gubernatorial nomination, further clearing Stefanik’s path.
