BEIJING – Major Chinese airlines, including Air China and China Southern Airlines, announced on Saturday they are offering special refund and rebooking options for passengers with tickets to Japan. The move comes in direct response to a security alert issued by China’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs, which has advised citizens to avoid traveling to the country due to safety concerns and political tensions.

The government’s travel warning cited intensified public security issues in Japan, including several violent incidents involving Chinese nationals. The ministry also pointed to provocative remarks by Japanese leaders concerning Taiwan, which it stated have strained relations and increased risks to the personal safety of Chinese citizens in the country.

In response, Air China, China Southern Airlines, China Eastern Airlines, and others will provide free refunds or itinerary changes for eligible tickets on Japan-related routes through December 31. The policy applies to tickets purchased before midday Saturday for travel to and from major Japanese cities such as Tokyo, Osaka, and Nagoya, covering both standard and mileage-redemption tickets.

The airlines stated the temporary arrangements are intended to offer flexibility to passengers adjusting their travel plans. Chinese authorities have also advised their citizens currently in Japan to remain aware of local safety conditions and to seek assistance from local police or Chinese diplomatic missions if necessary.
