Los Angeles Man Dies on California Freeway After Detached Tire Crashes Through Windshield

A 68-year-old man from Los Angeles was killed Monday morning on State Route 60 in Beaumont after a tire from an oncoming vehicle detached, flew over the center divider, and struck his windshield, according to the California Highway Patrol.

The incident occurred shortly after 11 a.m. in the westbound lanes of SR-60, west of Jack Rabbit Trail. Investigators reported that a silver BMW 328i traveling eastbound lost its left rear tire, which became airborne. The 54-year-old Riverside man driving the BMW was not injured.

The detached tire crossed into the westbound lanes and collided with a white Toyota Sienna, striking its windshield and roof. The driver of the Toyota lost control, hitting the center divider wall before coming to rest against a dirt embankment. He was pronounced dead at the scene by authorities.

A female passenger in the Toyota was transported to a local hospital with what were described as minor injuries. The California Highway Patrol is investigating the crash and has asked anyone with information to contact their San Gorgonio Pass Area office at (951) 846-5300.
