The vision of ossification does not imply an end to innovation but rather a redirection. Buterin stated that new developments should increasingly occur on Layer 2 rollups, wallets, privacy tools, and user-facing applications.
This move is considered “healthy” as Layer 2s already handle a significant portion of Ethereum’s transaction volume. By moving more activity off the main chain, Layer 1 can focus primarily on settlement and security functions.
The Cost of Maturity
Buterin acknowledged that this shift comes with trade-offs. He lamented the dissipation of the “spirit of exploration” that characterized Ethereum’s early days, noting a current trend towards “fast follower” strategies rather than genuine innovation.
The maturing ecosystem, influenced by institutional players and the rise of memecoins, has seen a decrease in imaginative development. Buterin believes that redirecting core development efforts could help reignite this spirit in the broader ecosystem.
Quantum Computing Warning
Towards the end of his address, Buterin issued a stark warning regarding the future of cryptographic security. He projected that elliptic curve cryptography, which underpins the security of both Ethereum and Bitcoin, could be broken by quantum computing before the next U.S. presidential election in 2028.
This timeline gives the Ethereum community roughly four years to transition to quantum-resistant cryptography. Such a fundamental change would require coordinated effort across the entire ecosystem, though Buterin hopes these adaptations can occur at the network’s periphery rather than its core.
