Santa Fe police, assisted by federal and state law enforcement, responded to a residential neighborhood Tuesday after receiving a report of a possible explosive device, prompting a multi-hour shelter-in-place order. The incident on the 1900 block of Hopi Road was resolved without any injuries, according to Deputy Chief Ben Valdez.
The situation began around 10:21 a.m. when officers were conducting a follow-up at a residence. According to a police news release, an occupant informed them that a roommate might have an explosive device inside their room. This prompted a significant law enforcement response, including the police department’s Explosive Ordnance Disposal team, along with technicians from the FBI and New Mexico State Police.
Authorities secured a search warrant for the home. Upon entry, they located and safely removed a suspicious device, which was transported from the scene for evidentiary processing. The city’s Emergency Management Department issued an alert shortly before noon, closing the street and advising residents to shelter in place.
The roommate was contacted by officers upon their return to the residence. The shelter-in-place order was lifted and the road reopened around 4:30 p.m. In a statement, police confirmed that “no danger to the public exists and no suspects are outstanding at this time.” The case remains under active investigation.
