A 38-year-old man has been sentenced to 20 years in state prison after pleading guilty to vehicular homicide for causing a multi-vehicle crash in Sarasota, Florida, that resulted in the death of a 71-year-old woman.
The Florida Highway Patrol reported that on April 23, 2024, Aramis Jerome Harrison was driving at an excessive speed southbound on US 301. Authorities stated that Harrison failed to stop for a red traffic signal at the intersection of Northgate Boulevard, leading to the fatal collision.
According to the investigation, Harrison’s vehicle ran the red light and collided with the left side of a second vehicle that was lawfully proceeding through the intersection on a green light. The initial impact caused Harrison’s vehicle to overturn and strike a third vehicle, triggering a chain reaction that involved a total of five vehicles.
The 71-year-old female passenger in the second vehicle was pronounced dead at the scene. All other drivers and passengers involved in the incident sustained various injuries. Following a criminal investigation by State Troopers, Harrison was arrested and booked into the Sarasota County Jail. On November 18, he entered a guilty plea for his role in the crash.
