Led by the U.S. Marshals Service (USMS) in coordination with 25 state and local agencies, the operation ran from December 1 to December 12, locating endangered youths ranging in age from 18 months to 17 years old.
The U.S. Marshals Service defines “critically missing” children as those at elevated risk due to factors such as violence, sexual exploitation, substance abuse, or domestic instability. According to the federal agency, the operation successfully located children in 14 counties across North Florida, as well as individuals who had been transported as far as Tennessee, Mississippi, and Louisiana. Greg Leljedal, Acting U.S. Marshal for the Northern District of Florida, described the initiative as the most successful missing child operation ever conducted in the region.
“Because of the tireless dedication of the U.S. Marshals and our law enforcement partners, 43 endangered children will now be home safe for the holidays,” Leljedal stated. He noted that the operation focused not only on location but also on providing immediate physical and psychological care to aid in the children’s healing process.
Significant recoveries included a 1-year-old missing from Leon County found in Baton Rouge, Louisiana, and a 17-year-old from Suwannee County recovered in Meadville, Mississippi. Authorities also located a 15-year-old victim of non-custodial abduction from Okaloosa County in Ocala. According to the USMS, the collaborative effort included personnel from the Florida Department of Law Enforcement, Homeland Security Investigations, and numerous Sheriff’s offices spanning from Escambia to Alachua counties.
