A 22-year-old woman was killed and a 28-year-old man seriously injured Saturday morning in Chicago’s Roseland neighborhood when their vehicle crashed into a tree after coming under fire from occupants of another vehicle, authorities said.
According to the Chicago Police Department, the incident occurred in the 200 block of East 103rd Street. The victims were traveling westbound in a dark blue Honda SUV when an unidentified car approached them. Investigators stated that gunmen inside the second vehicle opened fire on the SUV.
Police reported that the victims continued driving in an attempt to evade the gunfire but subsequently crashed into a tree. The female driver sustained fatal injuries resulting from the collision and was transported to Advocate Trinity Hospital, where she was pronounced dead. The male passenger, who suffered bruises and other injuries from the crash, was taken to the University of Chicago Medical Center in serious condition.
Law enforcement confirmed that the gunmen fled the scene immediately following the shooting. No other injuries were reported.
