An 84-year-old man was pronounced dead at the scene of a three-vehicle collision Saturday evening in Camden-Wyoming, Delaware, following a failed overtaking maneuver in a no-passing zone, according to the Delaware State Police.
Authorities reported that the incident occurred on December 20, 2025, at approximately 6:00 p.m. on Westville Road, between Allabands Mill Road and Mallard Drive. Preliminary findings by the Delaware State Police Collision Reconstruction Unit indicate that a Chevrolet Suburban, driven by the deceased, was traveling eastbound directly behind a RAM 2500 towing an enclosed utility trailer. Investigators stated that the Suburban attempted to pass the RAM in a designated no-passing zone.
During the attempt, the Suburban sideswiped a westbound Ford Fusion before returning to the eastbound lane and striking the front driver’s side of the RAM. The force of the impact caused the RAM to exit the roadway, where it struck a tree and subsequently caught fire. The driver of the Suburban, identified only as a resident of Camden-Wyoming, sustained fatal injuries. His identity is being withheld pending family notification.
The police report confirmed that the driver of the RAM, a 31-year-old man from Dover, and the driver of the Ford Fusion, a 37-year-old man from Hartly, were uninjured in the crash. Westville Road was closed for approximately five hours while investigators examined the scene and cleared debris.
Investigative Outlook
The Delaware State Police Collision Reconstruction Unit is continuing its inquiry into the specific circumstances surrounding the crash. While the preliminary investigation points to an improper passing maneuver, authorities are collecting further evidence to finalize their report. Police have requested that any witnesses or individuals with surveillance or dash-camera footage contact Sergeant J. Jefferson or Delaware Crime Stoppers. As this matter involves an active collision reconstruction, conclusions regarding total liability remain pending the completion of the official investigation.
