A Butler County grand jury has indicted a 27-year-old man on multiple charges, including aggravated vehicular assault, following a head-on collision in Liberty Township that resulted in serious injuries to a Cincinnati Children’s Hospital nurse.

Yoan Perez Ventura faces charges of aggravated vehicular assault, two counts of operating a vehicle while intoxicated, and obstructing official business. The charges stem from an incident that occurred during the early morning hours of November 20 in the 6400 block of State Route 747.

According to the Butler County Sheriff’s Office, Ventura was operating a 2013 Hyundai Elantra northbound when the vehicle crossed the center line. The Elantra struck a southbound 2023 Honda Civic driven by the nurse. Emergency responders transported the victim to UC West Chester Hospital for treatment of serious injuries.

Officials stated that Ventura required mechanical extraction from his vehicle at the scene. Deputies reported discovering an open alcoholic beverage inside the car and noted multiple indicators suggesting the driver was intoxicated. During the preliminary investigation, deputies alleged that the driver possessed no identification and provided a false name and varying dates of birth.

Following his transport to UC Medical Center and subsequent release into custody, officials identified Ventura as a Guatemalan national present in the country illegally. Butler County Sheriff Richard Jones confirmed that U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) has placed a detainer on Ventura. Sheriff Jones further noted that the suspect had been previously arrested for a drunk driving incident in West Chester in 2023.

Judicial and Custodial Proceedings

The indictment marks the formal commencement of criminal proceedings in the Butler County Court of Common Pleas. The existence of an ICE detainer indicates that federal immigration authorities are monitoring the case, potentially complicating the defendant’s custody status and future legal standing within the United States. It is important to note that all individuals are presumed innocent until proven guilty in a court of law.
