CHICAGO – Metra officials launched a public awareness initiative on Tuesday morning, positioning workers at downtown stations to distribute informational materials aimed at helping commuters recognize the indicators of human trafficking.
The campaign, which coincides with National Human Trafficking Prevention Month, is designed to prevent criminal actors from utilizing the Metra rail system to transport victims. According to the agency, workers handed out magnets detailing specific “red flags” that passengers should observe.
Among the signs highlighted by the transit agency are individuals traveling with few personal belongings, persons who appear restricted from speaking for themselves, or those wearing clothing inappropriate for the current weather conditions. Metra Spokesman Michael Gillis emphasized the importance of public vigilance in safeguarding the transit network.
“We’re just asking people to be aware and be on the lookout, and if you spot anything, let our conductor know, let the police know, and they’ll follow up,” Gillis stated.
