Investigators state that the incident took place approximately eight miles west of Auburn just after 10:00 p.m. According to official ALEA findings, 44-year-old Marcus Edwards was operating a vehicle that departed from the roadway and struck a ditch. The vehicle subsequently collided with the rear end of a tractor-trailer which was positioned off the roadway at the time of the impact.

Authorities report that immediately following the collision with the tractor-trailer, Edwards’ vehicle caught fire and was quickly engulfed in flames. First responders pronounced Edwards dead at the scene. The driver of the tractor-trailer, identified as 66-year-old Debbie Still of Phenix City, was not injured during the incident.
