Five individuals have been arrested on suspicion of trafficking Vietnamese migrants from France to British shores following a coordinated operation by the National Crime Agency (NCA). The arrests target an alleged organized crime group accused of facilitating illegal entry into the United Kingdom via hazardous routes.
According to the NCA, three men aged between 27 and 33 were re-arrested at a prison in Liverpool, where they were already on remand. Additionally, a 31-year-old man was arrested at a prison in Birmingham, and a 22-year-old man was apprehended at a residential address in Rotherham. Investigators allege the group has been transporting migrants into the UK using lorries and small boats since the beginning of 2024.
The NCA disclosed that the suspects allegedly retained the genuine Vietnamese passports of the trafficked individuals to enforce debt repayment. NCA Branch Commander Jon Hughes stated that this operation is part of nearly 100 ongoing investigations targeting those “directly involved” in facilitating illegal crossings from Europe.
“People smugglers have no regard about the welfare of those they transport. They purely see human beings as commodities to make money from,” Hughes said in a statement regarding the arrests.
