HOUSTON — A nearly six-hour standoff at a north Houston extended-stay hotel ended peacefully early Sunday morning after SWAT officers negotiated the surrender of a barricaded subject, according to the Houston Police Department (HPD).
The incident began around 11:50 p.m. at the Suburban Studios located along the North Freeway (I-45) near Rankin Road. HPD Captain Kenneth Campbell stated that officers were initially dispatched following reports of significant smoke emanating from a guest room, which subsequently triggered the hotel’s fire sprinkler system.
Upon arrival, witnesses reported that the occupant of the room appeared to be behaving in a threatening manner and that he may have been in possession of a weapon. "Some of the civilians that were in there initially had tried to check on him, and they reported that it seemed like it was a threatening manner, so they backed away until police came," Captain Campbell told reporters at the scene.
Due to the potential threat and the subject’s refusal to exit the room, a SWAT team was deployed to the location to manage the situation. Negotiators established contact with the man, eventually convincing him to surrender to authorities without further incident around 5:00 a.m. It remains unclear if any weapons were recovered from the scene following the arrest.

Following the suspect’s surrender, Houston Fire Department personnel evaluated the individual for medical needs.
