Sarasota Police Investigate Fatal Overdose at Jungle Hideaway; No Public Threat

Sarasota police are investigating the death of a 30-year-old Venice man following an apparent intentional overdose at a bar on South Tamiami Trail, according to law enforcement officials. The incident occurred at Jungle Hideaway, a local establishment that has recently undergone ownership changes.

Sarasota Police Department spokeswoman Genevieve Judge confirmed that officers responded to the scene, where the man was subsequently pronounced dead. While the name of the deceased has not been released pending the completion of the case report, detectives notified his family members on February 14 at Sarasota Memorial Hospital. Authorities have classified the event as an isolated incident.

According to Judge, the death is being treated as an intentional overdose. “There is no threat to the public, and this appears to be an isolated incident,” Judge stated. The bar, which has operated at the location since 1958, was formerly known as the Cabana Inn before a name and ownership change in 2024.

The location has been the subject of police investigations in the past. In December 2022, a woman was found shot to death at the premises when it was operating as the Cabana Inn. Court records indicate that Elon Dula was convicted of second-degree murder with a firearm in July 2025 regarding that specific case.

Investigative Outlook

While the classification of this death as an intentional overdose indicates no external criminal liability or ongoing threat to the community, the involvement of law enforcement remains necessary to formally close the case.
