As the holiday season unfolds, the Gallio Family Christmas Trees returns for its 31st year in South Tampa, continuing a cherished tradition despite recent challenges.
Crossing the quaint yellow bridge leading to the tree lot immerses visitors into a festive atmosphere, reminiscent of a winter wonderland. According to long-time employee Curt Duncan, ‘You come in, and I mean all this stuff is free, you can just hang out, have fun, meet Santa, enjoy the snow machine and Christmas movies.’ The tree farm stands as more than just a retailer; it’s a centerpiece for holiday joy.
However, the decision to reopen this year was not straightforward. In the wake of devastating hurricanes that battered the Bay Area, including parts of South Tampa, owner Ed Gallio felt conflicted about resuming operations. ‘We were lucky ourselves,’ Gallio acknowledged. ‘But just all the devastation, I mean driving through the neighborhoods, it was terrible. And it was like, I just don’t feel right doing this with everybody suffering like they are.’ Despite these initial doubts, overwhelming community support propelled the decision to move forward. Gallio noted their Facebook outreach yielded unanimous encouragement, with not a single negative comment.
Even amidst displacement, customers are determined to keep their holiday traditions alive. Although some must opt for smaller trees due to limited living spaces, their commitment to celebrating remains. Gallio observed, ‘People who once bought big trees in the past don’t have room for it, wherever they’re living now. But, they’re still getting a tree, even if it’s a smaller tree.’ This adaptability highlights the enduring spirit of the season.
Further supporting the Christmas spirit, Gallio sources many of their trees from North Carolina, a region also affected by Hurricane Helene. This choice not only provides quality trees but also supports communities in recovery. Located at 4518 S. Manhattan Ave, the tree lot is open from 9 a.m. to 8 p.m. Sunday through Thursday, and extends to 9 p.m. on Fridays and Saturdays, offering ample opportunity for residents to partake in this festive ritual.
The Gallio Family Christmas Trees exemplifies resilience and community spirit, providing a haven of joy and tradition for the people of Tampa during challenging times. The open arms of the Gallio Family continue to welcome all who seek to embrace the holiday spirit.
