In a shocking development in Las Vegas, a man was fatally shot after calling 911 for assistance during a home invasion. Brandon Durham sought help while hiding in his house with his daughter, as shown by released 911 audio.
On November 12, Brandon Durham dialed 911 reporting a break-in at his residence and expressed immediate concern for both his and his daughter’s safety. Assistant Sheriff Dori Koren outlined events leading up to the tragic incident, stating that police officer Alexander Bookman, aged 26, responded at the scene.
Officer Bookman was among the initial responders who forcibly entered the home, where he encountered Durham entangled in a physical altercation with the intruder, both fighting over a knife. Body camera footage, released by authorities, captured Bookman’s demand for the individuals to drop the weapon before he fired one shot. The recording graphically depicts both Durham and the intruder falling, followed by Bookman discharging five additional rounds.
The 43-year-old Durham succumbed to his injuries within his home. According to Koren, it was established that Durham and the intruder were familiar with one another. The intruder faced charges including home invasion and assault.
The incident, however, has sparked controversy. David Roger, representing the police union, defended Officer Bookman’s actions, claiming he adhered to his duty and had no criminal intent. Nevertheless, Durham’s family is calling for Bookman’s dismissal and prosecution, asserting there was no threat warranting the use of force.
Civil rights attorney Lee Merritt, representing the Durham family, questioned the justification for the shooting in a public statement, insisting Durham was no threat. This has heightened scrutiny of the Las Vegas Metropolitan Police’s handling of the case.
As investigations continue, Clark County District Attorney Steve Wolfson has refrained from commenting on potential legal charges against Bookman. Meanwhile, Officer Bookman remains on administrative leave pending the continued inquiry.
This case underscores the complexities involved in rapid-response situations faced by law enforcement and highlights ongoing debates over police conduct. Questions around appropriate use of force in the midst of apparent peril remain, demanding thorough examination.
