Syrian Insurgents Stage Strategic Move into Aleppo

In a significant twist to the Syrian conflict, insurgents have entered Aleppo, challenging government forces and stirring historical tensions in the city.

Thousands of Syrian insurgents advanced into Aleppo, using vehicles equipped with improvised armor, and established their presence at key landmarks like the iconic Aleppo Citadel. This movement comes after minimal resistance from Syrian government troops, indicating a strategic advantage for the insurgents. Witnesses reported two airstrikes near the city’s perimeter late Friday aimed at the reinforcements of these insurgents, resulting in significant casualties according to a war monitor.

The Syrian military confirmed the incursion and emphasized their ongoing strategic response, including a temporary redeployment aimed at minimizing civilian casualties and preparing for a counteroffensive. Insurgents have not set up permanent bases but were captured on video dismantling symbols of President Assad’s regime, including tearing down his posters.

This development is a severe blow to Assad, who regained control over Aleppo in 2016, a victory that turned the tide in the Syrian civil war. Aleppo has been relatively calm since the 2016 battles, which were significant in the government’s ability to reassert control. However, infrequent violence has continued, with recent incidents exacerbated by Turkey’s diplomatic failures to uphold a ceasefire agreement involving Russia and Iran.

The insurgents’ push comes amid redirected focus of Assad’s allies like Hezbollah, who are dealing with separate conflicts, notably a recent ceasefire with Israel. During this period, Israel has intensified strikes in Syria, targeting Hezbollah and Iranian interests.

The insurgent capture of Aleppo’s central points, including the Citadel, was marked by celebratory gunfire rather than direct confrontations. Locals, including returning resident Abdulkafi Alhamdo, have expressed mixed emotions about witnessing insurgents take control of the city center, reigniting memories of past conflicts.

Reports indicate that the city’s airport operations have been suspended and the medical facilities are overwhelmed with casualties, reflecting the severity of the recent skirmishes.

In response, Syria’s pro-government media advocated for military reinforcements and blamed Turkey for the insurgent advances. Meanwhile, international figures like Russian officials have intervened with claims of significant militant casualties inflicted during their air support to Syrian forces.

The resurgence of insurgent activities in Aleppo marks a pivotal moment in Syria’s ongoing conflict, presenting new challenges for the government’s hold on strategic locations and complicating the regional power dynamics further.
