New York and Pennsylvania were significantly hit, with areas along Lake Erie blanketed by snow. Authorities were forced to declare a state of emergency in parts of New York, while Pennsylvania’s governor issued a disaster emergency proclamation. The National Weather Service warned of severe conditions, particularly in regions downwind of Lakes Erie and Ontario. Nearly two feet of snow accumulated in parts of New York, Ohio, and Michigan, with a significant amount recorded in Pennsylvania. The harsh weather conditions are expected to persist into the early part of the week, exacerbating travel difficulties.
Temperature plunges have been notable, with cold advisories issued for parts of the Northern Plains. Predictions indicate that the eastern third of the U.S. will experience temperatures around 10 degrees below average by Monday, largely due to a blast of Arctic air moving across the region.
New York Governor Kathy Hochul noted in a phone interview her administration’s proactive measures, which included deploying snowplows, consulting with utility companies, and dispatching additional personnel to assist affected areas. “We’re there with reinforcements to ensure safe travel over this busy weekend,” she stated.
In Pennsylvania, emergency responders were actively dealing with the aftermath of nearly 200 incidents within a 24-hour period. Roads such as I-90 and parts of the New York Thruway faced closures due to hazardous conditions, causing significant disruptions to travel plans.
Michigan was similarly affected, with lake-effect snow continuing to disrupt life across the state. The Upper Peninsula experienced significant snowfall, with some areas receiving more than two feet, according to meteorological reports. The city of Gaylord recorded a new single-day snowfall record, impacted by lake-effect bands rolling off Lake Superior.
The Buffalo Bills football team sought additional manpower to clear snow from their stadium ahead of a scheduled game, highlighting the extent of the storm’s reach and its impact on local events.
Meanwhile, in northwestern Pennsylvania, travel was limited to essential travel only, and several travelers sought refuge in local accommodations. A hotel near I-90 provided shelter, as staff offered blankets and opened additional rooms to those stranded by the storm.
