The NFL and its players’ union have reached an agreement to modify their policies on substance abuse, focusing on THC levels and penalties, as detailed in a recent league memo.
The revised substance abuse policy notably increases the threshold for a positive test for THC, the active compound in marijuana. Previously set at 150 ng/ml, the new limit is now 350 ng/ml. This adjustment reflects changing perspectives on marijuana use and its effects on players.
One key change is that teams will no longer receive details about which substance led to a positive test. They will be informed merely of the violation itself. This shift aims to maintain privacy and reduce potential stigmatization of players.
In cases where fentanyl use is suspected, the medical director is authorized to test players. Notably, there will be no disciplinary action for a positive fentanyl test. However, players must attend mandatory meetings on the substance. Missing such a meeting will incur a fine of $15,000.
The adjustments also involve reduced fines. For instance, the penalty for a second missed test has been decreased from a one-game suspension to a $45,000 fine. Moreover, if players avoid missing tests over time, their record will reset, and those with pending discipline will have past missed tests excused.
The league clarified its stance on the misuse of prescription drugs as well, imposing a $15,000 fine if players record and share the testing process on social media.
Moreover, the policy on performance-enhancing substances has undergone revisions. The time allowed from notification to testing has been extended. Certain suspended players may even be reinstated after suspension, receiving pay despite positive tests.
These policy changes indicate a significant shift in how the NFL and NFLPA approach substance use, balancing player welfare with the integrity of the sport.
