Houston Texans’ linebacker Azeez Al-Shaair will serve a three-game suspension after his appeal was rejected, as confirmed by the league on Wednesday.
The appeal, overseen by hearing officer Ramon Foster—appointed collaboratively by the NFL and the NFL Players Association—upheld the initial suspension decision. This ruling follows an incident involving an illegal hit on Jacksonville Jaguars quarterback Trevor Lawrence. During the hit, Lawrence had already slid, surrendering himself in the play, when Al-Shaair delivered a forearm blow. The impact led Lawrence into the fencing position, marking the play as dangerous and unsportsmanlike.
This event unfolded during the Texans’ narrow victory over the Jaguars, ending 23-20 in favor of Houston. Al-Shaair was subsequently ejected from the game, and tensions flared between the two teams, culminating in a skirmish. Following the incident, Trevor Lawrence was placed on injured reserve due to the sustained concussion.
As a result of the suspension, Al-Shaair will miss critical upcoming games: Week 15 against the Miami Dolphins, Week 16 against the Kansas City Chiefs, and a Christmas Day game against the Baltimore Ravens. However, he will be available for the season’s closing match against the Tennessee Titans.
Al-Shaair expressed his frustration on social media, adopting a defiant tone and stating, ‘if you want me to be your villain, I’ll be your villain,’ accompanied by a middle finger emoji. Despite this public reaction, the suspension underscores the league’s commitment to player safety and sportsmanship, a sentiment echoed by NFL vice president of football operations, Jon Runyan. Texans general manager Nick Caserio defended Al-Shaair, challenging Runyan’s harsh criticism and referencing Al-Shaair’s lack of prior suspensions. Nevertheless, this latest infraction points to a larger issue concerning player conduct and the enforcement of league rules.
