In an unprecedented crackdown, the Dominican Republic has seized nearly 9.5 tons of cocaine, the largest drug seizure in the nation’s history.
Authorities discovered the illicit cargo hidden within a shipment of bananas at the Caucedo port in Santo Domingo, the country’s main seaport. Valued at $250 million, the drugs originated in Guatemala and were destined for Belgium, according to Carlos Devers, a spokesperson for the Anti-Drug Agency.
This significant seizure resulted in the detention of ten suspects, as reported during a press conference. The authorities have underscored the Dominican Republic’s strategic role as a major transit point for drug trafficking, which complicates the nation’s efforts to combat organized crime.
The confiscation marks a new milestone in the country’s efforts to curb drug trade, surpassing the previous largest seizure in 2006. At that time, officials intercepted over 5,680 pounds (2,580 kilograms) of drugs, also at the Caucedo port.
The Dominican Republic’s authorities have already seized nearly 47 tons of drugs in the current year alone, reflecting a robust and ongoing commitment to dismantling drug trafficking operations. This achievement highlights both the challenges and successes in the region’s law enforcement efforts.
The recent drug bust not only sets a new record in the Dominican Republic but also highlights the persistent challenge of drug trafficking in the region. Continued vigilance and international cooperation remain essential in combating this global issue.
