Oklahoma State University has confirmed an agreement to restructure the contract of head football coach Mike Gundy, securing his position amidst recent controversies and a challenging season.
The discussions for a restructured contract took place over two days, involving Oklahoma State’s governing body and school officials. This came after a special meeting of the Oklahoma A&M regents, who oversee employment matters for the university, was convened without concluding with a resolution initially. Board chair Jimmy Harrel, however, assured reporters, stating, “We have a plan.”
In the revised agreement, Gundy’s $7.75 million annual salary is set to be reduced. This reduction allows for a redistribution of funds to players as part of a revenue-sharing initiative. Additionally, Gundy’s contract buyout has been minimized from the original $25.3 million, which would have been owed had he been terminated without cause. These changes reflect Gundy’s willingness to support the revenue-sharing model, even though initial disagreements existed over the extent of his salary cut.
University sources revealed that Gundy’s continued tenure is backed by university President Kayse Shrum and Athletic Director Chad Weiberg, though at least one regent expressed a differing opinion. Gundy, who took charge in 2004, is recognized as the most successful coach in Oklahoma State’s history, with a record of 169 wins against 88 losses. Under his leadership, the Cowboys clinched the Big 12 title in 2011 and secured runner-up finishes in 2021 and 2023, along with 18 consecutive bowl appearances, until this season’s disappointing 3-9 record.
Gundy’s previous rolling five-year contract was set to renew annually. However, the restructuring talks have introduced new dynamics between Gundy and the university. Amid the ongoing negotiations about his contract, Gundy made significant staffing changes by dismissing offensive coordinator Kasey Dunn and defensive coordinator Bryan Nardo.
This is not the first time Gundy has revised his contract. In 2020, he voluntarily accepted a $1 million salary cut and other contract adjustments following program reviews and criticisms, including a social media controversy involving a T-shirt from a media outlet. These actions were praised by then-athletic director Mike Holder for demonstrating leadership and adaptability.
Gundy’s tenure has not been without controversy. Recently, he faced backlash for comments regarding critics, asserting that those who are vocal about his team’s performance “can’t pay their own bills.” Although he later issued an apology, this instance reflects ongoing challenges in his role as coach.
