The Florida Department of Children and Families has initiated a vital relief effort for residents impacted by Hurricanes Helene and Milton, setting up a D-SNAP application site at Tropicana Field.
Bridget Royster, the Assistant Secretary for the Office of Economic Self-Sufficiency, highlighted the aim of the D-SNAP program to assist hurricane victims who were residing in Pinellas County during the storms. This program, known as Disaster Supplemental Nutritional Assistance Program or D-SNAP, provides food assistance to those who are not usually eligible for SNAP benefits. It’s intended for people who suffered income loss, property damage, or relocation as a result of the hurricanes.
The operational logistics of setting up this aid program in such a large county are significant. According to Royster, the plan involved coordinated efforts from hundreds of staff members and local stakeholders to implement this operation across 28 counties statewide. Residents who qualify for D-SNAP will be issued an electronic benefit transfer (EBT) card. This card enables them to purchase food at authorized USDA retail locations within their registered county.
Applicants are urged to register online through the Department of Children and Families website to streamline the process. Upon arrival at Tropicana Field, applicants will undergo a brief interview process and, if approved, will receive their EBT card on the same day, ensuring immediate access to food assistance.
The D-SNAP program at Tropicana Field represents a critical support initiative for those affected by Hurricane Helene and Milton. With efficient registration and approval processes in place, eligible residents can quickly access essential resources to aid their recovery.
