In a wide-ranging interview with NBC’s ‘Meet the Press,’ aired on Sunday, President-elect Donald Trump discussed various key issues, including trade tariffs, justice, and immigration. Trump acknowledged the possibility that his proposed tariffs on key U.S. foreign trade partners could increase consumer prices, stating, ‘I can’t guarantee anything. I can’t guarantee tomorrow.’ This marks a shift from his campaign stance, which promised to curb inflation through these tariffs. He justified the tariffs by asserting that they are intended to create a fair trade environment and pledged to impose substantial tariffs on goods from Mexico and Canada unless they take steps to stop illegal immigration and drug trafficking into the U.S.
Trump also addressed the justice system, especially concerning his legal disputes and his opponents. Despite having been convicted on multiple felonies, Trump hinted at potential retaliatory measures against political adversaries linked to legal actions against him. He expressed a desire to pardon supporters involved in the Capitol riot and suggested that some lawmakers involved in his investigation should face legal consequences. Nevertheless, he insisted, ‘I have the absolute right. I’m the chief law enforcement officer.’ Despite these statements, he seemed to retreat from previous urges to investigate President Joe Biden, stating, ‘I’m not looking to go back into the past.’
Immigration was another focal point in Trump’s interview. He reiterated his intention to secure the U.S.-Mexico border and deport millions residing illegally in the U.S. by introducing a massive deportation program. He mentioned plans to challenge birthright citizenship through executive action, despite constitutional protections. While he expressed a willingness to collaborate with Congress on solutions for individuals who were illegally brought into the U.S. as children, he also stated, ‘The only way you don’t break up the family is you keep them together and you have to send them all back.’
