The National Football League (NFL) has unveiled the International Player Pathway (IPP) Class of 2025, featuring 14 exceptional athletes from 13 different countries. This announcement underscores the NFL’s ongoing commitment to discovering and nurturing international talent.
The International Player Pathway (IPP) program, initiated in 2017, aims to identify and develop elite global talent, providing these athletes the opportunity to refine their skills and potentially secure a position on an NFL roster. The program’s participants will partake in an intensive training course starting January 2025 at IMG Academy in Bradenton, Florida. This 10-week program includes both on-field and classroom education, culminating in a skills showcase during the University of South Florida’s Pro Day in March.
Participants who excel during this showcase may be signed as free agents, or, if eligible, selected during the 2025 NFL Draft. Each NFL team is allowed one roster exemption for an international player, an opportunity available from the start of their offseason program until the roster is trimmed to 53 players. During this period, international players can also be added to a special 17th practice squad roster spot, exclusive to international athletes from any of the 32 NFL teams.
Historically, the IPP program has welcomed athletes from diverse sporting backgrounds such as rugby, basketball, Gaelic football, and track & field. This vast background is supported by top-tier football coaching staff, enabling the development of well-rounded athletes. The 2025 IPP class includes impressive talents such as Jordan Petaia and Laitia Moceidreke from Australia, Joachim Trouabal and Maceo Beard from France, and Aaron Sexton from Ireland, among others.
NFL executive Peter O’Reilly expressed enthusiasm for the program, indicating it provides ‘life-changing opportunities’ for international players aspiring to make their mark in the global football arena. Since the program’s inception, 41 international players have been signed to NFL teams, with 23 currently on team rosters. Notable alumni include Jordan Mailata from Australia and Jakob Johnson from Germany, who have experienced active rosters since 2017.
In addition to the core class, a group of specialized international kickers and punters is set to join the program in the coming weeks. The initiative is part of the NFL’s broader strategy to enhance global football development and establish a sustainable pathway for international players.
The NFL’s International Player Pathway Class of 2025 not only highlights the league’s dedication to globalizing American football but also serves as a vital platform for international athletes to achieve their professional dreams. With its comprehensive training and exposure opportunities, the program continues to make a significant impact on the lives of many aspiring football players.
