First Responders Honored for Courageous Rescue in Lauderhill

Three police officers from Lauderhill were celebrated for their heroic actions in rescuing a young girl from a lake, demonstrating the impact of their swift response and teamwork.

In a commendable act of bravery, Sgt. Joseph Nistor, Ivan Perez, and Nicholas Colon were recognized at a City Commissioners Meeting in Lauderhill for their life-saving intervention. The officers utilized their training and collaborated with a good Samaritan to locate and rescue a child who had fallen into a lake in the middle of the night. Their actions were crucial in ensuring the child’s safety.

Sgt. Nistor expressed that any member of the Lauderhill Police Department would have stepped up under similar circumstances. He added that the mud, which had entrapped both him and the child, played a part in preventing further danger. Officer Perez, relating as a parent, shared his empathy and the importance of such quick decision-making during the rescue.

Bodycam footage recently released depicts the moment officers rushed to the scene after a concerned citizen alerted 911 about a child running towards the water from a parking area. Upon their arrival, Sgt. Nistor found the young girl submerged waist-deep and swiftly moved to rescue her. Despite becoming ensnared in the muddy lakebed himself, he managed to pass the child to safety with the help of his team.

The girl’s mother arrived shortly after the incident, explaining that her daughter had wandered off. Precautionary measures were taken as the girl was brought to the hospital for a health evaluation. Officer Colon noted that while the recognition is appreciated, their actions were simply part of their duty as police officers.

The officers emphasized their readiness to respond to any call, reinforcing their commitment to public safety. Their story highlights the essential nature of police work and the officers’ dedication to protecting and serving their community.
