Flagler County Activates Warming Center Amid Cold Spell

In response to the forecasted drop in temperatures, Flagler County will open its community warming center on Wednesday evening.

Flagler County is preparing for a significant cold spell by reopening its community warming center. The Sheltering Tree, located at the Rock Transformation Center on North State Street in Bunnell, will serve as a refuge starting from 5 p.m. Wednesday and will continue until 8 a.m. the following day. This facility aims to provide shelter not only to the homeless but also to anyone lacking adequate heating, marking its fourth activation over November and December.

According to predictions from the National Weather Service, temperatures are expected to dip below the 40-degree threshold on December 11. This forecast meets the criteria for initiating the cold-weather shelter, ensuring a safe and warm environment during the frigid overnight hours. The shelter offers essential amenities, including cots and meals, to those in need.

To facilitate access to the shelter, the county will provide bus transportation encompassing two distinct routes. On the east side of the county, buses will pick up passengers at several locations: Dollar General at Publix Town Center on Market Avenue at 3:30 p.m., McDonald’s at Old Kings Road South and State Road 100 at 4 p.m., Dollar Tree parking lot behind Carrabba’s at 4:30 p.m., and Palm Coast Main Branch Library at 4:45 p.m. Meanwhile, on the west side, collection points include Dollar General at County Road 305 and Canal Avenue in Daytona North at 4 p.m., Bunnell Free Clinic on Moody Blvd. at 4:30 p.m., and Bridges United Methodist Church in Bunnell at the same time due to proximity.

These efforts by Flagler County reflect a proactive approach to ensuring community safety and comfort during harsh weather conditions. By providing accessible transportation and resources at the warming center, the county is committed to addressing the immediate needs of its residents.

As Flagler County braces for colder temperatures, the opening of the community warming center underscores the importance of providing resources to those in need. This initiative highlights the collaborative effort to safeguard the well-being of all residents, regardless of their circumstances, during extreme weather conditions.
