At 69 years old, he decided it was time for a lifestyle overhaul. He recalled his previous success with the Atkins diet in 1998, where he lost 47 pounds, but admitted that sticking to it long-term was challenging. ‘It’s tough to say goodbye to carbs forever, particularly when your ancestors invented the pierogi,’ he remarked. Eventually, the pounds crept back, and during his annual physicals, his doctor continually stressed the need to address his weight.
In May 2023, Mankiewicz made a decisive move towards change. Dissatisfied with his appearance and how he felt, he embarked on a mission to lose weight without adhering to any specific diet plan. He simply eliminated foods that are widely recognized as unhealthy, including bread, potatoes, pasta, desserts, and fast food. He also increased his consumption of green vegetables and took advantage of a Peloton exercise bike, a gift from his wife, which he used rigorously every day.
Setting a personal challenge for himself, Mankiewicz questioned if he could achieve 100 rides in 100 days. He surpassed his goal by completing 184 consecutive days of riding, an impressive feat considering his demanding job with ‘Dateline.’ Despite the temptation to use medication like Ozempic or Mounjaro, Mankiewicz chose a more traditional approach. ‘Giving myself a shot every week did not seem like something that I wanted to do,’ he explained. Instead, he focused on changing his eating habits and was glad to have accomplished his weight loss through sheer willpower. However, he acknowledged that some people might need extra assistance, and he expressed no judgment towards those seeking help through other means.
