Mets’ Post-Soto Strategy What’s on the Horizon

The Mets have made headlines with their agreement with Juan Soto, one of the most lucrative contracts in Major League history. While the deal isn’t finalized, the consensus is clear: the Mets are strategically enhancing their roster. At the Winter Meetings in Dallas, David Stearns, president of baseball operations, maintained discretion regarding Soto but hinted at further roster developments.

Stearns acknowledged ongoing efforts to strengthen the team, emphasizing that despite Soto’s signing, the Mets have more work ahead. With certain gaps still obvious in the roster and financial flexibility due to expiring contracts, their intentions remain ambitious.

The rotation is a focal point. The Mets have welcomed Frankie Montas and Clay Holmes to the team, joining Kodai Senga and David Peterson. However, a fifth starter is essential for a well-rounded rotation. Possibilities include Corbin Burnes and Max Fried, though Stearns might opt for shorter deals with pitchers like Walker Buehler, Nathan Eovaldi, or Andrew Heaney. Another avenue is exploring trade opportunities, potentially involving Chicago’s Garrett Crochet.

First base is another priority. With Mark Vientos likely retaining his role as a third baseman, acquiring a first baseman is crucial. Pete Alonso remains a strong candidate, yet alternatives like Christian Walker at a lower cost or a trade market solution are also under consideration.

In terms of the bullpen, despite securing minor league talent such as Génesis Cabrera, Kevin Herget, and Rico García, the need for experienced relievers on major league contracts persists. Like their rotation approach, the Mets may look for relievers willing to commit to shorter contracts.

The Mets are not resting on their laurels after the Soto signing. With strategic plans in place, their priority is enhancing their lineup across rotation, first base, and bullpen. The flexibility in their approach suggests a readiness to capitalize on opportunities to optimize the team’s competitiveness for the upcoming season.
