A serious incident unfolded in Winter Haven, Florida, as a local woman faces charges for allegedly stealing and pawning jewelry from an elderly woman’s residence. According to the Winter Haven Police Department, the suspect became involved through her boyfriend when he was hired for yard work.
The Winter Haven Police Department reports that the elderly victim enlisted a man in October to assist with removing a hurricane-damaged tree from her property. Accompanying him was his girlfriend, Kalan Davis, age 35, who participated in additional work inside the victim’s home during several visits from October 16 to November 8. Davis was compensated for these additional tasks.
Suspicion arose when a jewelry box, previously placed on the bed, went missing. Davis claimed to have found the box under the bed, despite the victim’s thorough search of the area prior. This discrepancy raised the victim’s concerns, especially after she noticed several pieces of jewelry valued at approximately $10,000 were missing after the couple’s visits.
Upon confrontation, Davis denied involvement, assuring the victim that she “loves her” and would “never do that.” However, police investigations led to pawn shops in the Winter Haven, Auburndale, and Lakeland areas, where they discovered jewelry matching the descriptions provided by the victim. It is alleged that Davis pawned these items for over $5,500.
On December 7, Davis was taken into custody on charges of grand theft, valued between $5,000 and $10,000. She was subsequently released from Polk County Jail after posting a $25,000 bond. Winter Haven Police Chief Vance Monroe commended the victim for her detailed recollection, which was instrumental in progressing the investigation. “Preying on the elderly is morally reprehensible,” Monroe stated, “but in this case, the suspect underestimated her target.”
