The latest week has brought notable performances from high school athletes across the Volusia-Flagler region. Several students have excelled in their respective sports, showcasing skill and determination.
In basketball, Reece Casto, a sophomore from Seabreeze, led his team to victories over Mount Dora Christian and Crescent City, scoring 18 points against the Bulldogs and 16 against the Raiders. Similarly, Keeva Heggins of Calvary Christian demonstrated impressive talent by scoring 16 points, taking six rebounds, and making five steals in a win against the Master’s Academy. Heggins continued her outstanding performance with 21 points, four rebounds, and eight steals in a subsequent win over Pine Ridge. Meanwhile, Justin Suarez from DeLand proved to be a formidable opponent, achieving 23, 26, and 24 points in separate games against Mount Dora, Pine Ridge, and Flagler Palm Coast.
Soccer also saw remarkable achievements with Amelia Cappella from Father Lopez scoring three goals in a sweeping win over Crooms Academy, marking her team’s first win of the season. Samir Hannan from Pine Ridge outdid himself by scoring four goals against Mainland and adding an assist. Additionally, Isabella Kummernes from Flagler Palm Coast contributed to her team’s success by scoring a goal and providing an assist against University, followed by two more goals in a match against Taylor.
In wrestling, Raegan Hatch of Deltona claimed victory in the 125-pound category at the Lady Panthers Kickoff, winning all matches by fall. Joslyn Johnson from Flagler Palm Coast dominated at 105 pounds in the Let Freedom Ring Girls IBT, pinning each opponent in less than a minute. Kyle Nilsson from New Smyrna Beach also shone by winning three consecutive matches to secure first place in the 215-pound weight class at the Captain Archer Varsity Memorial Classic.
These performances highlight the talent and dedication present in the Volusia-Flagler high school sports scene. As athletes continue to push boundaries and achieve great results, they set a standard of excellence that inspires both peers and aspiring athletes.
