According to major voter surveys conducted during the election, a notable group of Trump supporters expressed worries about the former president’s extreme positions, honesty, and potential authoritarian governance. Surprisingly, many of these voters still cast their ballots for Trump, driven by dissatisfaction with the current administration’s handling of issues such as immigration, crime, inflation, and the cost of living.
Reports from both exit polls and the AP VoteCast survey highlight that the economy was a major factor for these conflicted voters. Despite disagreeing with Trump’s major policy proposals, such as large-scale deportation of undocumented immigrants and his approach to immigration control, many voters prioritized economic stability and the hope for better financial outcomes under his leadership.
The data also reveals that Trump managed to secure a portion of voters traditionally aligned with Democratic ideals. For instance, a significant percentage of pro-choice voters, including Latino communities and women who support legal abortion, voted for Trump. Among the concerns of Trump’s uncertain supporters were policies involving deportation and reproductive rights, areas where many voters did not align with Trump’s stance. Despite this, the economic focus dominated their decision-making processes, tilting their support towards Trump, particularly among economically pessimistic voters who also supported abortion rights.
