Yves Erold Altieri, 53, of Opa-locka, has turned himself in to authorities following a tragic incident in Miami Gardens last month. Altieri faces charges of DUI manslaughter and vehicular homicide after he was involved in a devastating crash at a construction site that resulted in the death of a worker.
The fatal crash took place on the evening of November 18, when Altieri crashed into a car that was halted at a red light on Northwest 27th Avenue and Northwest 183rd Street. Despite attempts by the other driver to make him stop, Altieri fled the scene, driving erratically and at high speed, according to the arrest report. Witnesses described his driving as dangerously aggressive, forcing other motorists to brake suddenly to avoid collisions.
Altieri’s reckless journey ended when he collided with a construction zone in the 16400 block of Northwest 27th Avenue. At the scene, 31-year-old construction worker Eduardo Meridas Llanas was just exiting his vehicle when Altieri’s car struck. Llanas suffered severe head and neck injuries and was airlifted to Aventura Hospital, where he succumbed to his injuries on November 21. Two other workers narrowly escaped the speeding vehicle by jumping out of its path.
Following the crash, Altieri was admitted to a hospital, where signs of intoxication were evident. Reports indicated a strong smell of alcohol on his breath, alongside bloodshot eyes and slurred speech. A subsequent toxicology test revealed a blood alcohol concentration of .305, significantly above Florida’s legal limit of .08. Additionally, it was uncovered that Altieri was driving with only a learner’s license at the time of the incident.
Altieri, who reportedly claimed no recollection of the earlier collision, has been taken into custody. During his court appearance, he was assigned a public defender, and his bond was set at $150,000.
This incident highlights the severe consequences of impaired driving and the critical need for adherence to driving regulations. The community mourns the loss of Eduardo Meridas Llanas, while legal proceedings continue for Yves Erold Altieri as he faces serious charges related to this tragic event.
