GOP Advances in Vermont Amid Affordability Concerns

In a surprising turn of events, Republicans achieved significant gains in Vermont, a state traditionally known for its progressive politics, during the recent general election.

Despite Vermont’s historical leaning towards progressive politics, the recent general election saw a shift as Republicans made notable inroads in state legislative races. While Vice President Kamala Harris secured a substantial victory over Donald Trump in Vermont, winning by over 31 points, the local races told a different story.

The state’s Republican Governor, Phil Scott, known for his moderate stance, was reelected with a landslide victory of nearly 52 points. His focus on stabilizing the school budget and preventing significant property tax increases resonated with voters, particularly those concerned about affordability issues. In addition, Governor Scott has been proactive in addressing Vermont’s housing crisis, an issue that has gained prominence among lawmakers in recent years.

The Vermont House of Representatives, previously dominated by Democrats with 107 out of 150 seats, saw a reduction to 91 seats combined for Democrats and Progressives, while the GOP increased their representation to 56 seats. In the Vermont Senate, the once 21 to 7 Democratic majority has been narrowed to a 16 to 13 advantage, with one additional Progressive member.

Governor Scott’s administration has emphasized the need for increased housing development, a sentiment echoed by Jason Maulucci, Scott’s policy director. He mentioned the necessity of collaboration with Democratic lawmakers to make housing more affordable given the state’s aggressive homebuilding targets of 24,000 to 36,000 new homes needed between 2025 and 2029.

Nationwide, the GOP’s gains were buoyed by economic dissatisfaction during President Joe Biden’s administration, with inflation driving traditionally Democratic constituencies, including Latino and young voters, toward Republican candidates. Although Kamala Harris attempted to mitigate these concerns during her campaign, her efforts reportedly fell short in key swing states.

The Vermont Republicans’ success is indicative of a moderation in the state’s political climate, where rural areas presented an opportunity for GOP gains. Despite the traditionally Democratic stronghold in the state capital of Montpelier, many voters expressed frustration over rising taxes and living costs, a sentiment captured by political consultant Lachlan Francis, who noted the voters’ discontent over inflationary policies.

The GOP’s recent successes in Vermont highlight a growing concern over affordability and economic stability among voters. This shift suggests that economic issues may increasingly influence traditionally progressive areas.
