A resident of Fort Lauderdale recently experienced a surprising encounter with wildlife, highlighting a growing concern in South Florida neighborhoods.
Christian Egger, living in the Riverside Park area, was taken aback during a routine coffee break when he noticed a coyote comfortably lounging on his boat. What seemed initially to be a misidentification of a neighbor’s pet quickly turned into an unsettling realization for Egger.
Upon stepping outside his backyard, Egger attempted to shoo the animal away. The coyote, displaying no aggression, retreated to a neighbor’s dock and eventually leapt into the canal, embarking on a swim lasting approximately 20 minutes. Egger watched as the creature paddled along the waterway before disappearing from view.
Egger expressed relief that the coyote remained calm and non-aggressive, especially since his small dog had been outside shortly before the sighting. ‘You know, 20 minutes before I had my puppy outside, and she made it through,’ he remarked with gratitude.
He further reflected on the potential risks, considering he also has a young son. Despite the alarming nature of the occurrence, Egger speculated that such animals are likely more fearful of humans.
Authorities from the Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission advise that residents should not approach coyotes if encountered. Instead, they recommend promptly reporting the sighting to appropriate channels, ensuring community safety.
This unexpected encounter serves as a reminder of the delicate balance between urban living and local wildlife. Residents are urged to remain vigilant and report sightings to manage and understand the presence of coyotes in suburban areas.
