1. Comfortable and versatile seats

Those who don’t have the classic guest room available to convert into an office can organize their work area in the living room or the bedroom. There are no rules to follow, but it is essential to choose furnishings in harmony with the style of the house, which are consistent with the character and warmth of the home environment.

The essential point is that the seat is still very comfortable, ergonomic, and able to support the back well. The magnificent Lou Read armchair designed by Philippe Starck & Eugeni Quitllet for Driade is, for example, extremely comfortable. It is an imposing and enveloping leather seat that perfectly welcomes the body with its high backrest and organic shapes.

Maggy by Viganò is a cheerful height-adjustable armchair with wheels. Its low armrests offer comfortable support and allow it to slide under the table. It is a transversal product capable of adapting to the most heterogeneous furnishing needs. The Kin chair by Radice Orlandini Design Studio for Baleri is also perfect for the desk and dining room. Its elongated “legs” support a body, with an ideal inclination to best accommodate the neck and head.

2. Stylish desks

It is crucial to provide a sufficiently large space on your worktop to keep everything you need close at hand. And when the desk is at home, it’s a good idea to place a vase with a few flowers on it and, perhaps, a pocket emptier. The home office desk must be practical and functional. Navarre by CR&S. Riva 1920 is a fascinating writing desk made entirely of solid walnut, equipped with drawers assembled with dovetail joints and cable holes. Its classic and sober shapes make it perfect for any room, from the bedroom to the entrance.

Another piece that is visually very light and, therefore, easy to position is the Fred desk designed by Roberto Lazzeroni for Poltrona Frau. Designed for stylish homes or offices, it features a drawer with soft closing, a wenge-stained solid ash wood structure and a seamless leather top decorated with delicate hand-made engravings.

Rialto by FIAM is a curved glass console able to illuminate spaces. It is made in different sizes to adapt to every need and comfortably accommodate books and PCs. It has a decidedly original shape, Mexique, by Charlotte Perriand for Cassina, a triangular table in Canaletto walnut. Designed in 1952 to furnish the student rooms of the Maison du Mexique at the Cité Universitaire Internationale in Paris, this table-desk is intended to take up as little space as possible and provides for the possibility of placing several pieces side by side to create multiple work island in a home.

3. Books and objects always in order

Shelves and bookcases are essential for designing a functional work area. Furthermore, these accessories can add a decisive character to the environment by customising materials, finishes and colours. For example, Lettera G’s Bookshape library is a real treasure chest for books. Its irregular compartments allow you to combine stored objects creatively, giving the proper visibility to special volumes. The methacrylate structure makes this object bright and colourful. Ren by Neri&Hu by Poltrona Frau defines an impeccable and elegant study corner. The two lateral uprights, slightly inclined, support the birch tops on walnut sides covered in leather, designed to be super ecological and versatile.

The More Light bookcase by Giorgio Caporaso for Lessmore is 100% recycled cardboard. It is a modular system with elements finished in different colours and patterns, able to create shelves of any height and length according to the needs of the house. In addition, the single modules, which are very resistant, can also be used individually as support surfaces or seats. Musa, designed by Alessandro D’Angelo for Mogg, is a wall shelf with irregular shapes. Vertical lines and circles intersect in pleasant and refined compositions with an elegance that recalls Art Nouveau geometries. Here, too, it is possible to combine multiple modules. The shelf can also be fixed to the wall in 4 different positions, creating fascinating and dynamic combinations of shapes and joints.

4. Lighting

It is essential to have good lighting on your work surface. A well-designed table lamp helps you work better and enhances the aesthetics.

Thanks to the adjustable arm, Megaphone by Stilnovo is perfect for reading. Icon of the fifties, this lamp has a brass structure and cheerful conical lampshades. Ruspa / 4 by Gae Aulenti for Martinelli Luce is another design masterpiece. Designed in 1968, it can be defined as an object – sculpture rather than a simple lamp. It has four arms fixed to the base and eight adjustable reflectors, with independent rotation from each other. Its shapes are a tribute to large and powerful construction site machines.

The Normanna table lamp by VI+M Studio for Purho recalls the magical spheres of clairvoyants. Its brushed brass base is embellished with coloured fabric fringes, which give it an ironic and retro touch.

5. Look at the floors to define the space

The carpet is a complement capable of characterising environments, delimiting spaces and giving personality. The choice of shapes, tones and materials is infinite. Numerous names in the world of design have reinterpreted this accessory with a millenary tradition with great originality.

The Sahara Grid rectangular carpet by Cassina is a contemporary reinterpretation of Berber carpets, nomadic tribes of the desert. It is a clean grid in neutral shades made of pure new wool.

Never Said by Alessandra Baldereschi for Mogg is a fun rug that lends itself well to a study-work area. Its soft colours and irregular edges make it look like a large sheet of paper that has been crumpled and then reopened.

Bonnard by Sicis is a mosaic to be placed on the floor, made with thousands of glass and marble tesserae. Ancient Roman decorations inspire the refined geometric and figurative motifs hand-made in the laboratories of Ravenna. The effect is that of a very classy floor, which adds a touch of style to any furniture, from contemporary to classic.
