SpaceX Achieves Successful Dual Launch of Communication Satellites

In a significant milestone, SpaceX successfully launched two communication satellites to medium Earth orbit from Florida’s Space Coast on December 17, marking the second event in a remarkable spaceflight doubleheader.

Today, at precisely 5:26 p.m. Eastern Time, a SpaceX Falcon 9 rocket roared to life at NASA’s Kennedy Space Center. It embarked on its mission carrying the O3b mPOWER 7 and 8 satellites into medium Earth orbit, a distance of approximately 5,000 miles above the Earth’s surface. This launch is a part of a continuous effort to expand the mPOWER communications constellation operated by Luksembourg-based SES.

The Falcon 9’s first stage executed a textbook landing on the droneship ‘Just Read the Instructions’ about 8.5 minutes post-launch, confirming SpaceX’s operational consistency. Notably, this event marked the initial liftoff and landing for this specific booster configuration, underscoring SpaceX’s commitment to reusable rocket technology. Meanwhile, the rocket’s upper stage proceeded to deploy the two satellites, with the first separation occurring 113 minutes after launch and the second following seven minutes later.

The O3b mPOWER constellation, currently operational with six satellites, is positioned to grow significantly. With eleven satellites planned for deployment, all are set to launch via Falcon 9 rockets. These satellites, weighing approximately 3,750 pounds each, are meticulously constructed by Boeing to enhance SES’s global communication capabilities.

This mission represented the day’s second successful launch for SpaceX, as earlier they dispatched the NROL-149 mission from Vandenberg Space Force Base in California. This consistent performance by SpaceX in 2024 has led to over 120 Falcon 9 launches, with the majority dedicated to building the Starlink broadband network. Starlink’s mega constellation now boasts over 6,800 operational satellites, with future plans potentially reaching 40,000 units.
