Courageous Baby Undergoes Life-Altering Surgery

The life of Andalusia Mesa changed dramatically soon after the birth of her son, Caper, in November 2023. Her initial excitement was quickly overshadowed by alarm when doctors realized that baby Caper was experiencing significant medical distress.

Andalusia had a relatively uneventful pregnancy and expected to welcome her son without complications. However, Caper was born with fluid in his lungs and was not breathing at birth, immediately requiring care in the neonatal intensive care unit (NICU). It was here that Andalusia’s instincts told her something more was amiss. Despite her concerns about her son’s unusual movements suggesting seizures, doctors initially dismissed her observations.

Determined to find answers, Andalusia persisted, and after sending video evidence to a neurologist, an EEG finally confirmed continuous seizures in Caper’s brain. At just seven days old, it was discovered that he had been seizing consistently, potentially even in the womb. This led to a diagnosis of a rare condition known as hemimegalencephaly (HME), treatable only by a hemispherectomy, a procedure to remove the affected brain part.

By December 28, 2023, Caper underwent this grueling surgery at just four weeks old. Although expected to bring him a chance of relief from seizures, the situation remained critical as the seizures persisted, necessitating another surgery. Unfortunately, Caper did not gain the hoped-for seizure freedom, leading to an extended and heartbreaking recovery period full of setbacks. Yet, Andalusia and her husband, Charles, remained resolute in seeking the best care for their son.

Caper’s diagnosis eventually expanded to include cerebral palsy and epilepsy, forcing his parents to adapt to an unexpected reality. Despite being on multiple medications, he continues to experience seizures regularly. Andalusia often finds herself negotiating mentally about her son’s future, hoping merely for basic communication skills and quality of life experiences possible for Caper.

Caper requires around-the-clock care and attention from various specialists and therapists, making it incredibly challenging for Andalusia to balance work and her role as a caregiver. The financial strain is severe, with Caper’s initial surgery costing $5 million. Despite these challenges, Andalusia draws strength from other families facing similar situations and the community they have formed through social media. These connections offer not just support, but hope – a thread of understanding that they are not alone in navigating these turbulent waters.

As Christmas approaches, Andalusia hopes to celebrate in a way that feels special for Caper. The family cherishes simple joys such as leaving the Christmas tree lights twinkling year-round for their son, whose affection for these small wonders sheds a gentle light during difficult times.

Despite the overwhelming challenges, Andalusia remains a fierce advocate for her son and all that he is faced with. Her message for other parents is clear: trust your instincts and push for the answers you believe in. Caper’s story is one of perseverance, strength, and the enduring power of love.
