Individual Detained Following SWAT Operation in Fort Lauderdale

An early morning SWAT operation in Fort Lauderdale has resulted in the detention of a suspect, following reports of a carjacking and kidnapping incident.

The incident unfolded at an apartment complex located at Dixie Highway and NE 18th Street, starting late Thursday night and concluding early Friday morning. Around 9:34 p.m., law enforcement agencies received a distress call from an individual claiming to have been carjacked and kidnapped at gunpoint. The individual was found in the NE 18th Street area and subsequently taken to a hospital with non-life-threatening injuries.

To locate the suspect, the Fort Lauderdale police deployed a SWAT team to the 1100 block of NE 18th Street. Residents in the area were kept from their homes for several hours as police and armored vehicles arrived on the scene. One local described the situation, noting the presence of numerous police cars and the use of drones in the area. “My wife was telling me there’s a lot of police cars out here and everything. I couldn’t get through so I’m parking across the street,” he recounted.

The tense standoff continued through the night, with authorities using two flashbangs at approximately 5:15 a.m. It was soon after that the announcement came of a person being detained. Police have indicated that the investigation is ongoing as they work to verify the events leading up to the arrest. At present, the identity of the detained individual remains undisclosed.
