Interior Design Trends Missing the Mark in 2024

It’s 2024, and interior designers have spoken about the bedroom trends that perhaps didn’t quite hit the sweet spot this year. While some design elements soared, others stumbled, leaving spaces feeling less than homely.

Neon lights, often more suited for buzzing nightlife venues, found an unexpected place in bedrooms this year. Brad Smith, CEO and lead designer at Omni Home Ideas, warns that these vibrant lights aren’t bedroom-friendly. ‘Although striking, neon lights can disrupt sleep patterns and create a jarring visual environment, which is less than ideal for a bedroom,’ he notes. A softer, layered lighting approach is recommended to create a relaxing atmosphere.

Wall-to-wall carpeting also seemed to make a surprising return, yet it brings with it a slew of challenges. While cozy underfoot, these carpets can be a nightmare for maintenance and allergen accumulation, Smith explains. Instead, area rugs on hardwood can provide both aesthetic appeal and practicality.

The monochromatic bedroom trend—a favorite for its sleek appearance—might not translate well in reality. Shiva Samiei, CEO of Shiva Samiei & Co., likens overly minimalist, single-tone spaces to hospital rooms rather than inviting sanctuaries. She advocates for layering textures and adding colorful accents to breathe life into these spaces.

Industrial-chic elements, though trendy for their edgy aesthetic, can leave a bedroom feeling cold and uninviting. Samiei suggests that if one desires an industrial style, it’s essential to balance its tougher elements with warm wood tones, soft bedding, and thoughtful lighting.

Meanwhile, low-to-the-ground beds, while minimalistic, pose practical issues. Lucy Harrison, a senior interior designer at SouthPark Interiors, points out that such beds often lack under-bed storage and can make a large room feel disproportional.

Matching bedroom furniture sets also raised eyebrows this year. According to Harrison, a bedroom doesn’t require a perfectly curated matching set. In fact, mixing different materials and finishes can make a space feel more dynamic and comfortable.

While trends come and go, the true essence of a bedroom lies in its comfort and functionality. This year, designers have shown us that while some styles are visually striking, they may not always serve the purpose of creating a warm, inviting space. Moving forward, it’s about finding that balance and ensuring that style complements the home’s soul.
