In a tragic event that unfolded on Sunday, a Florida sheriff’s deputy lost his life during a routine traffic stop when he was shot by a suspect, who later died in a confrontation with law enforcement.
Cpl. Elio Diaz, a dedicated member of the Charlotte County Sheriff’s Office, was conducting a traffic stop on a white pickup truck at a gas station in Charlotte Harbor around 3 p.m. during his duty. The situation took a fatal turn when the suspect, identified as 24-year-old Andrew Mostyn, pulled out a rifle and fired upon Diaz, resulting in critical injuries.
Following the shooting, Cpl. Diaz was transported to a nearby hospital, where he succumbed to his injuries despite medical efforts. The news of his passing has left a deep impact on the community and the law enforcement fraternity.
Immediately after the incident, Mostyn fled the scene, prompting a manhunt. Charlotte County Sheriff Bill Prummell reported that deputies later located Mostyn at a nearby Popeye’s restaurant. Upon confrontation and when Mostyn reached for his weapon, deputies were compelled to open fire, striking him in the head. Mostyn was subsequently transported to a nearby hospital, where he too died from his injuries.
Sheriff Prummell, visibly emotional, described Diaz as a beloved colleague and a devoted family man. ‘Elio was a friend, a committed father, and an exemplary law enforcement officer. His loss will be deeply felt by his family, friends, and the community he served,’ Prummell stated.
The death of Cpl. Elio Diaz serves as a somber reminder of the risks faced by law enforcement officers daily. As the Charlotte County community mourns this loss, they honor a man who dedicated his life to serving and protecting others.
