China has issued a stern warning to the United States following the recent announcement by President Joe Biden regarding military sales and support for Taiwan.
The Chinese government, on Sunday, expressed strong opposition to America’s latest military assistance to Taiwan. This announcement includes the provision of up to $571 million in defense-related materials, services, and military training for Taiwan, a self-governing island that China considers as part of its territory.
The Defense Department had previously announced $295 million in military sales, further intensifying the situation. In reaction, the Chinese Foreign Ministry released a statement urging the US to stop aiding Taiwan militarily and accused the US of engaging in ‘dangerous moves’ that threaten peace in the Taiwan Strait.
President Biden’s recent authorization follows the allocation of $567 million for similar purposes in September. This assistance involves a purchase of 300 tactical radio systems valued at $265 million and 16 gun mounts costing $30 million. Taiwan’s Foreign Ministry welcomed these sales, posting on X that it affirms the US government’s commitment to Taiwan’s defense.
In October, the US approved a $2 billion arms deal with Taiwan. This package includes an advanced missile defense system, which has drawn Beijing’s ire, prompting military exercises around Taiwan. Taiwan has demanded China cease its military activities in nearby waters, arguing they disrupt international shipping and threaten regional stability.
The geopolitical tensions continue, as former US President-elect Donald Trump indicated a lack of commitment to defending Taiwan in the event of a Chinese invasion, suggesting Taiwan should financially compensate the US for its defense. Currently, Taiwan spends around 2.5% of its GDP on defense.
The ongoing developments highlight the strained relations between the US and China over Taiwan, with military sales and activities continually testing the volatile dynamics.
