Ohio State’s Howard Leads Dominance Over Tennessee in CFP

In a decisive triumph, Ohio State showcased its strength in the first round of the College Football Playoff, defeating Tennessee 42-17, with quarterback Will Howard playing a pivotal role.

Will Howard delivered an outstanding performance, completing 24 of 29 passes for 311 yards and throwing two critical touchdowns to standout freshman Jeremiah Smith. This victory not only advances Ohio State in the playoffs but also serves as a significant morale booster following their recent struggles against Michigan.

Ohio State demonstrated dominance right from the start, scoring on their initial three possessions and forcing Tennessee into three consecutive punts. Though Tennessee managed to score a field goal and a touchdown in the second quarter, they failed to mount any significant offense in the later stages, managing only a late touchdown when the game was already decided.

Ohio State’s coaching strategy, led by coach Ryan Day, saw a more aggressive approach than their recent games, focusing on spreading the field and utilizing their top playmakers. “We really put together a full, all-out performance,” Howard stated after the game, reflecting the team’s comprehensive execution on the field.

The Buckeye’s defense, considered the best in the nation statistically, effectively neutralized Tennessee’s efforts. They pressured Tennessee’s quarterback Nico Iamaleava, resulting in four sacks, two of which were by standout JT Tuimoloau. Tennessee was held to just 256 yards and a mere 3.7 yards per play, illustrating Ohio State’s defensive prowess.

Ohio State also capitalized on Tennessee’s player injuries, with Tennessee’s Dylan Sampson and key receivers struggling due to health issues. This limitation hindered Tennessee’s ability to counter Ohio State’s multifaceted offense, which saw running back TreVeyon Henderson contributing with two rushing touchdowns.

Despite a strong turnout of Tennessee fans, filling over 104,000 seats in Ohio Stadium, the atmosphere favored Ohio State’s momentum and tactical execution. This win sets the stage for a highly anticipated rematch against Oregon at the Rose Bowl on New Year’s Day.

Ohio State’s comprehensive team effort against Tennessee not only secured their place in the next playoff round but also showcased their potential to rebound from past challenges.
