In a significant move, first baseman Paul Goldschmidt has reached an agreement with the New York Yankees for a $12.5 million, one-year contract, according to information provided to The Associated Press by an individual familiar with the negotiations.
The agreement, announced on Saturday, is pending a successful physical, highlighting the Yankees’ strategic acquisitions following Juan Soto’s transition to the New York Mets. Prior to Goldschmidt’s addition, the Yankees had secured the talents of left-hander Max Fried, closer Devin Williams, and outfielder/first baseman Cody Bellinger. This latest signing likely signals that Bellinger will primarily focus on outfield duties.
The Yankees currently find themselves without a left-handed reliever in their 40-man roster and are actively pursuing options for a third baseman. Goldschmidt’s addition introduces a seven-time All-Star and a four-time Gold Glove recipient, who holds the noteworthy accolade of 2022 NL MVP.
Following the conclusion of a substantial five-year, $130 million contract with St. Louis, Goldschmidt entered free agency. His career trajectory includes eight seasons with Arizona and a subsequent six with the Cardinals. Despite experiencing a career-low .245 batting average last season with 22 home runs and 65 RBIs, Goldschmidt saw a late-season resurgence. From July 28 on, he improved to a .283 average, hitting seven home runs and accumulating 25 RBIs.
On the statistical front, Goldschmidt achieved a .295 average against left-handers this year, accompanied by five home runs, 16 RBIs, and an .839 OPS over 167 plate appearances. Against right-handers, he recorded a .230 average, 17 home runs, 49 RBIs, and a .675 OPS in 487 plate appearances.
Goldschmidt’s overall career statistics are impressive, boasting a .289 average with 362 home runs and 1,187 RBIs from his tenure with both the Diamondbacks and the Cardinals. In 2022, his performance peaked with a .317 average, 35 home runs, and 115 RBIs, alongside a .981 OPS.
Additionally, the Yankees have solidified a deal with right-hander Jonathan Loáisiga for a one-year term, featuring a club option for 2026. According to pitching coach Matt Blake, Loáisiga’s recovery from Tommy John surgery may see him return by late April or May. Blake expressed confidence in Loáisiga’s potential as a high-leverage pitcher, albeit emphasizing the need for care to ensure a complete recovery before his return to competitive play.
Paul Goldschmidt’s transition to the Yankees marks a pivotal change in their lineup, bringing experience and proven performance. While his addition strengthens their roster, the Yankees’ pursuit of additional talents, particularly in their pitching lineup and infield, demonstrates their commitment to remaining competitive in the league.
