A Newfound Appreciation for Mom’s Unwavering Support

Having kids taught me a profound lesson: just how much I still rely on my mom.

Growing up, my mom was the heart and soul of our family. She was the kind of parent who brought life to every room she entered, making childhood feel like one big adventure. Whether it was spontaneous outings to drive-in movies or lively barbecues by the lake, her presence turned ordinary moments into cherished memories. I knew I was loved to the moon and back, but it wasn’t until I had my own children that the depths of her love truly hit home.

The turning point in this realization came when I decided to spread my wings in my twenties. Leaving Australia for the bustling streets of London, I embarked on my own journey. Those years were filled with excitement and new experiences, but they were also marked by a growing distance from my mom. It was easy to feel independent and self-sufficient when I was halfway across the world, caught up in my own whirlwind of life.

However, it was after returning to Australia and giving birth to my first child that the dynamics began to shift. My mom, ever the supportive spirit, flew down to be by my side. Her presence over those seven weeks was invaluable. She cooked, she comforted, she cared. Every gesture, from rocking my son to sleep to encouraging me to take a much-needed nap, was a gentle reminder of her enduring love and support. “Get dressed, honey. I’m taking you to lunch,” she’d say on days when the walls felt like they were closing in.

Watching her care for my son with the same tenderness she once showed me opened my eyes. It felt as though I was seeing her anew, understanding for the first time the boundless love parents have for their children. She was my ally, my rock, always ready to defend and support, no matter the circumstance.

As my mom prepared to return home, fear crept in. How would I manage without her steady hand guiding me through new motherhood? But with a reassuring hug, she reminded me, “I’m only a phone call away. You’ll be OK.” Indeed, she was right. With her guidance, I found my way just as she had always promised.

In the beautiful chaos of parenting, I’ve come to see my mom not just as the woman who raised me, but as an unwavering source of love and strength. Her sacrifices, patience, and endless support have left an indelible mark on my life, illuminating the path as I walk in her footsteps.
