In a significant move for South Florida’s sports infrastructure, Florida Governor Ron DeSantis announced a substantial state investment dedicated to enhancing the roadways around Inter Miami CF’s upcoming stadium, Miami Freedom Park.
On Thursday, Governor DeSantis, accompanied by Lieutenant Governor Jeanette Nuñez and the Secretary of Commerce, declared that $8 million will be granted to Miami-Dade County. This funding aims to improve traffic flow by constructing new roadways around the stadium, underscoring the state’s commitment to facilitating better access to major sports venues in the region.
Although Miami Freedom Park itself is a privately funded endeavor, the state’s investment is expected to considerably benefit the local economy. The new Miami Freedom Park Drive is designed to streamline transportation to and from the stadium. DeSantis emphasized that this infrastructure investment will not only assist traffic efficiency but also stimulate job creation and attract new businesses to South Florida.
The Miami Freedom Park project, featuring a $350 million stadium with a seating capacity of 25,000, is part of a larger $1 billion development initiative. This expansive plan includes a 58-acre public park and an entertainment district, promising to redefine recreational and economic landscapes in the area. Construction on the stadium commenced in August 2023, with a groundbreaking ceremony expected later this year.
Inter Miami CF is expected to continue playing at their current location, Chase Stadium in Fort Lauderdale, until the conclusion of the 2025 MLS season. The move to their new stadium is slated for 2026, aligning with the completion of the Miami Freedom Park project.
During the announcement, Governor DeSantis didn’t shy away from addressing national politics, expressing his views on the presidential race. He criticized Minnesota Governor Tim Walz, the Democratic vice presidential candidate, particularly over Walz’s policies on COVID-19 restrictions and transgender children’s rights.
The $8 million infrastructure boost serves as a testament to Florida’s dedication to advancing its sports facilities and supporting economic growth through strategic investments. As Miami Freedom Park progresses, it is poised to become a central hub for both sports and community engagement in South Florida.
